Fashion Week Udpate

The major Fashion Weeks are not over, but I wanted to update before it became too overwhelming! So far, I have to say, London has stood out the most to me. In general, I think Fashion Week has been better this season as we are slightly lifted out of the worst part of the recession. I was so tired of reading the word “recession” in the critiques of each designer’s collection on Style.com.. it was overdone. This season, I haven’t read it once!! It seems that most designers have been way more optimistic this season, using bright colors and youthful, uplifting designs to bring us out from what seemed like the Dark Ages.

However, London Fashion Week has definitely outshined New York, in my opinion. Then again, what do I know haha. It was their 25th anniversary, as well, so that may have had something to do with that extra British oomph.

London was all about the crazy bright colors and weird prints like Mary Katrantzou and several others. Other things I noticed were dolly/girly themes, more cut-out dresses, orange, belted jackets, deconstructing traditional garments, and stripes. Some trends I noticed in New York were: cut-outs (mostly in dresses), transparency, blue, jumpsuits/one-pieces, mixing and clashing of prints, khaki green, feathers, huge side pockets, anoraks, romantic draping, stripes, orange, tribal/egyptian collars, knee high/thigh high panty hose, and polka dots. Make-up was not as dramatic this season; very au natural (what a coincidence, I’ve been trying to do the same haha).

London Fashion Week favs……. will be done tomorrow! I. am. so. tired.

It’s almost 4 AM ..

, and I’ve been watching movies all day. I am officially a waste of life. Nevermind my life, fashion is something I immensely think about, and I have yet to read anything about fashion and religion. I know these are two things that seem unconnected, but for me, personally, religion is a huge part of my life. I aspire to make it all of my life. By that, I don’t mean that I am going to become a missionary, but I am a Christian. Christianity is not merely a label, a set of rules, or a group of people who try to be good and nice, but it is a lifestyle. To further elaborate may bore many people, but I doubt anyone is reading this besides me anyway.. hahah (this is more of a diary than a blog, isn’t it?).

So, it has taken me 21+ years to finally get to this point, but I have found a purpose in my life. As a Christian, I want to strive to do all things for the glory of God. I guess to some I sound like a “Jesus freak,” but I think Christians have been misunderstood and misrepresented for a long time, as are many peoples and religions. What it means to be a Christian is to believe that God, the creator of the world, sent His son, Jesus, to the earth to save all people by sacrificing himself. He was crucified and nailed to a cross so that every person in this world would be free from condemnation and their sins to enjoy a life of freedom and salvation in the name of the Lord. There is so much more I can say on that, but I guess I can use future entries to share more.

Anyway, I bring up religion because I think that people seek purpose through many things: friends, school, jobs, etc. Fashion is another venue, and this is definitely evident through the beautiful creations that designers imagine and execute on the runways. Designers want to create something innovative and desire to redefine the modern woman. Clothes are the outer extension of our minds in a sense; we use what we wear to express ourselves. Many claim not to have style or care about fashion, but obviously everyone (or almost everyone) wakes up making a choice to wear something. In a generation where increasingly we judge and are judged by images due to the Internet, media, etc., our image increasingly becomes important. Of course, appearance has been important for centuries upon centuries, but we are surrounded by a huge proliferation of images of thin celebrities wearing expensive designs. Everyone wants to look good, but we cannot be defined by what we wear. For me, as huge as fashion plays a role in my life, I know that my identity does not and cannot consist of merely what I wear or what I appear to be. My identity is found in Jesus Christ, someone who is eternal, perfect, and blameless. Why place my everything in things that will perish and fade away?

Hence, some perishable fashions!

RODARTE FOR TARGET

is the greatest three words put together. EVER. They are only my favorite designers in the world. Even though they’re still new designers, fairly unknown, at least, compared to the big guns, I consider them one of the most innovative and beautifully talented designers of our generation. I know that doesn’t mean much as someone who does not have a lot of fashion history knowledge; I can only judge from what I see and read. However, I’m a big advocate for innovation in a designer. I know it’s important to be able to sell your products, to create something practical and wearable. At the same time, I can’t help but think that that is a very capitalist or even.. American concept? Maybe not, maybe I’m being too critical here. In Japan, however, most of their clothes are not practical at all. Clothes from designers like Rei Kawabuko, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, etc. are either avant-garde (I don’t know the full meaning of that word) or extremely out there. These designers seem to have a different kind of philosophy and their lives follow. I think American designers are much too concentrated on what the consumer wants or what they should want instead of creating something that they solely want to inspire others with or to move fashion forward. Then again, I may be missing a key concept or foundation of fashion here..

Anywho, why read ramblings when you can look at Rodarte.

Notice, these are all images from famous fashion bloggers. It’s funny that there is even such a thing as famous fashion bloggers, that they can be celebrities in this industry. Who says fashion is limited to those who can design, invest, and buy? Technology is so closely linked with fashion now,,
